A flooded river has washed away Namadzi bridge in the area of Traditional Authority Nanseta in Thyolo, isolating villagers from accessing social amenities.

One of the locals, Medson Kashoti from Mwitere village told Zodiak Online on Friday that this is a result of a heavy downpour in the afternoon.

Kashoti added that the river has washed away crops and the bridge, separating people from Makande, Namagonya, Mwitere and Savala with Luchenza secondary school, Mangunda, Chonde health facilities and Thyolo district hospital.

"It was in the afternoon when the heavy rains flooded the river, washing away many hectares of crops and Namadzi bridge. Currently, people from this side cannot go to Thyolo boma or Mulanje, Goliati or Limbe," he said.

Meanwhile, Thyolo District Council roads supervisor, Brown Biliati has confirmed that the floods have damaged one of the spans of the bridge making the road impassable.

"It is true that the bridge has been damaged. Now there is no road communication. According to the communities, this is the first time for the water to overflow like this in this river," he confirmed.

He said the quick replacement of the bridge will depend on the enough manpower that the deployed contractor would have.
