Police in Blantyre have arrested a 28-year-old man, Davie Mtendere in Phalombe, on suspicion that he broke into a house of a police officer in Chileka, stole a gun and used it to commit another crime in Thyolo, where he shot dead a motorcycle taxi operator.

Chileka police publicist, Jonathan Filipo, has confirmed that in January this year, Mtendere broke into one of the houses at Chileka police and went away with a Webly revolver Mark II, six rounds of ammunition and assorted household items.

"He has been arrested following our joint intensified intelligence driven investigations," he said.

Filipo alleges that in the same month, the suspect with his accomplice shot dead Dickson John Harry, aged 48 in a foiled motorcycle robbery in Thyolo, near O.G Issah farm, along Thunga-Chipendo road.

It is reported that the two shot Harry on 25 January 2023 after he picked them at Thunga Trading Center in the district. He later died at Thyolo District Hospital.

The suspect has been arrested at Miseufolo in Phalombe while the gun and three live ammunition were found buried in a maize field in Bangwe township in Blantyre.

Mtendere hails from Lolo village, Traditional Authority Mabuka in Mulanje District.
