There is hope that more than 80 young people from Lilongwe will be equipped with tailoring and fashion design skills, thanks to Old Mutual Malawi for donating K3 million to Tingathe Malawi organisation.

Old Mutual Group Chief Finance Officer, Vera Zulu believes this will assist to reduce the problem of unemployment in the country.

“As a business, we are equally concerned with the problem of unemployment and we believe that supporting young people with vocational skills would go a long way in changing the status quo,” said Zulu.

She added that it is encouraging that the company’ partnership with Tingathe is yielding positive results.

“Our partnership with Tingathe started way back in 2017 and we are glad that over the period, we have together managed to graduate three cohorts of about 600 young people from peri-urban communities at Mtandire, Mtsiriza, Njewa, Senti, Kauma, Mgona and area 49 in Lilongwe,” she said.

This comes when Malawi Growth and Development Strategy 3 states that 20.4 percent of the total population of Malawi is unemployed.

The company thinks this untapped human capital, if fully engaged, would contribute to socio economic development of the country.

"The MDGS 3 further elaborates that the youth who complete secondary education and do not proceed to higher education remain unemployed due to lack of necessary skills for the job market.

"With financial challenges at the backbone, only a few youths have the opportunity to transition to tertiary education,” said the Old Mutual Group Chief Finance Officer.

On his part, Tingathe Malawi Representative, Chikondi Kaponda promised to use the donations for the intended purpose.

“We are very thankful to Old Mutual for the assistance, it will go a long way,” explained Kaponda.

He hopes his organisation will continue to work hand in hand with the company in order to improve the living standards of poor young people.
