At least 74 hunger-stricken families in two villages of Loti and Mkwata in the area of Senior chief Mphuka claim are yet to receive maize under the government's lean season intervention, a  week after they were told to wait when others were receiving the items at Mkhathe.

Village Development Committee (VDC) chairperson for Chilengo, Felix Baleta said hunger is severe in the area, calling on the government to swiftly aid the people who are also yet to receive a three-month cash transfer through mobile money platform.

"They had gone to Mkhate three times to receive the maize, but they were told to wait since there was an arrangement for them to receive their maize at Njale area. But to be honest, people are really suffering with severe hunger here, government needs to act with speed," Baleta said.

Meanwhile, both Thyolo District Commissioner, Rosemary Nawasha and Senior chief Mphuka insist that all the targeted beneficiaries received their maize in the area.

Nawasha explained that, "our food distribution team went there thrice," adding that if there are some who were left out, they should report for the authorities to request some maize from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA).

The council is also disbursing a three-month K75, 000 to over 4, 000 households and currently over K362 million has been issued out for them to buy maize, according to Nawasha.
