Government says it is in the final processes of procuring 550,000 text books in a move to replenish primary schools with adequate learning materials.

Education's Principal Secretary, Chikondano Mussa, has told Zodiak Online on Tuesday that the text books to be distributed in standard five to eight are expected to be in the country in the next six weeks.

Mussa said procurement of the text books comes after the ministry had earlier replenished standard 1-4 with Mathematics, Chichewa and English text books.

"Procurement of textbooks is in its final stages at Malawi Institute of Education (MIE) and all things being equal the books will ready for distribution in six weeks’ time," said Mussa.

She added that the move is to ensure that learners have adequate textbooks in all primary schools across the country.

Meanwhile, Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC), Executive director, Benedicto Kondowe, has lauded the government for the commitment to supply books lacking in most primary schools.

Kondowe said most institutions have been running with inadequate books for a long period, a development that affect provision of quality education in public schools.

For the past years, public schools in the country have been grappling with shortage of text books with eight learners sharing one text book, according CSEC.
