Neno DHO pharmacy technician Thokozile Sambo disclosed this today when Save the Children-Italy through a local organization, Beyond our Hearts Foundation made a donation of 50kgs of chlorine to help fight cholera in places where clean water supply has been interrupted.

Sambo lamented that the hospital as of last week had only 35kgs of chlorine against the fifteen health facilities that the district has.

"This donation has come at a right time as we have very few supply of chlorine and painkillers, so we are very thankful for this donation," she said.

The Pharmacy Technician also called on well wishers to assist in the supply of painkillers especially now that many people have been injured by the aftermath of the cyclone Freddy.

Taking his turn, Beyond our Hearts Foundation executive director Russel Msiska says apart from the chlorine donation, they are also distributing food and nonfood stuffs to the affected families under their Localisation Pilot project, under a "Crisis Modifier" budget.

"Save the Children through us, has activated the Crisis Modifier budget which our district council is tapping resources from to respond to this crisis which has affected people's lives," said the ED.

Msiska further disclosed that the chlorine will be of great importance to families whose houses and latrines have been damaged as such houses are at risk of contracting the cholera disease.

Meanwhile, the Neno  District Council Relief and Rehabilitation officer Brighton Mphinga has called for more support as the district has not yet started responding with human needs to the survivors.

He said that "we are still receiving reports of damages to houses, so our team is still making assesments but we can say we need more support from various sources."

Neno district has five cholera camps with a total figure of confirmed cholera cases standing at 687 and 10 deaths.
