Thyolo District Commissioner, Rosemary Nawasha has sounded an SOS for more support to cyclone Freddy survivors, reporting that many camps are yet to be reached a week on.

Nawasha explained that since the cyclone hit over 4, 000 households and killed 16 people, only few stakeholders have helped the survivors currently in over 40 evacuation camps in the district.

Meanwhile, Northern Region Water Board (NRWB) has on Monday donated relief items to Ligowe and Nansato  camps in the district worth K5 million.

"We are grateful to NRWB for coming with these relief items because these are the items that these camps were missing. But we are not satisfied because we have more camps. Here, they have assisted this camp and they are going to the second one, but we have more than 40 camps throughout the district that have not been reached at all, "she said.

On his part, NRWB Board Chairperson, Frank Tumpale Mwenefumbo said this is in response to government's call on the disaster, adding that stakeholders should assist survivors holistically by including sanitary items to ensure hygiene is intact in camps.

"We have followed a good example of President Lazarus Chakwera who has been in the south to cheer the disaster stricken people. Therefore, we needed to heed to his order that government resources should be used to bring about relief to all the affected people here," he said.

The items included, flour, rice, cooking oil, buckets, sanitary items and plastic papers.

Currently, according to Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), 490, 098 of people have been displaced, 918 injured while nearly 474 people have died following the cyclone in the country.
