World Connect Malawi has supported 418 Cyclone Freddy household survivors from seven districts to rebuild their lives.

Executive director for the locally-led grant making organization, Frank Kasonga, says the organization collaborated with 11 partner community organizations to ensure an effective response for the survivors as they live with those affected.

"Our initial step was to identify 11 community organizations and partners who actively engaged with the survivors. We consulted with them to determine the specific type of humanitarian assistance required, tailored to the severity of each situation because they are part of the affected communities.

"We allocated the K34 million through the 11 community organizations, strategically positioned closer to the survivors. This approach effectively minimized logistical expenses typically associated with transporting response materials from central locations to the affected communities," he said.

Meanwhile, Glasten Enosi, one of the beneficiaries residing in Mulanje, says that the gesture “will alleviate some of the challenges faced in the aftermath of the disaster.”

In Mulanje, World Connect Malawi collaborated with its partner organization, Children of Hope, to distribute essential materials.

The organization’s executive director, Kenneth Mumma, said that “as representatives of the affected communities, we are immensely thankful to World Connect Malawi and the generous donor partners for their invaluable support."

World Connect Disaster Response Fund received support from numerous individuals including Friends of Malawi (USA) who played a significant role in contributing to the success of this initiative.

In April 2023, the organization launched the Cyclone Freddy Response Fund which successfully raised about K34 million from generous contributors.
