Police in Neno have apprehended Justin Kalimu Pofela, a 26-year-old man, on charges that he allegedly murdered his friend's wife after being hired to do so by the husband.
Neno police deputy publicist Rebecca Msoliza says the alleged murder happened as the husband was jealous of losing his wife to another after she denied his advances for a reunion.
Msoliza further says that the victim, Damalesi Harry, was 23 years old at the time of her death, which occurred in December 2022 following her separation from her husband.
"On May 24th, 2023, the suspect was apprehended and during the subsequent interrogation, he confessed to have been contracted by the deceased's husband to carry out the killing. The pair successfully executed their plan, after which they buried her body in a nearby bush and planted a banana tree to conceal the crime," she said.
The suspect received a partial payment of K8,000 out of the agreed-upon sum of K50,000 for the execution of the mission.
It is being said that the suspect was then angry at the delay by his accomplice to settle the balance and one day he shouted at the man at a drinking joint a situation which raised some suspicions.
Upon this revelation, the suspect was arrested by the members of the community policing forum and handed over to Ligowe police unit while the husband to the deceased fled.
A post-mortem conducted by a forensic clinical officer from Neno District Hospital revealed that the cause of death was severe bleeding resulting from a knife wound to the neck.
Pofera's accomplice, Stanly Likupe, remains at large.
The police is further appealing to couples to seek professional counseling rather than taking matters into their own hands.
The suspect originates from Makanani village in the jurisdiction of Senior Chief Mlauli within the district.
