Some people living around Thyolo district hospital have complained of a blocked sewer system which is producing bad smell.

The concerned people who include health workers said they have for four months been reporting the matter to the authorities but they keep on pushing the matter to each other.

A visit by Zodiak Online at the hospital on Saturday confirmed the situation where sewage excreta were seen flowing anyhow at the nurses’ hostels, the nearest borehole causing discomfort around including emergency area.

In a written response, Thyolo district director of health and social security, Dr. Arnold Jumbe said they are in the process of sorting it out by assembling the necessary tools and resources to do the job as soon as possible.

Dr. Jumbe explained "the sewer system is constantly vandalized by people who are looking for metals to sell as scrap metal, thieves have stolen almost all manhole covers and people throw rubbish in the sewer system resulting in blockages."

Meanwhile, some insiders have also told Zodiak Online that among other challenges, the hospital's emergency ward has no running water while the kitchen has only one electric pot working.

"As we speak, things are not working in the hospital. Imagine, the cooks at the hospital are preparing food using firewood and only one electric pot which has remained; the rest are not being maintained," revealed one worker.
