The Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) has received a huge boost of new surgery equipment amid reports that the hospital conducts more than 65 Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) operations every month.

Principal Nursing Officer for ENT Unit, Squaiker Salema told journalists in Blantyre on Sunday that some of the common conditions that are operated on are tumors that affect the ear, nose, and the throat.

“In Malawi, Queens is the only hospital with a fully functioning ENT, where we conduct the surgeries. We do about 1, 000 ear, nose and throat surgeries annually,” said Salema.

Hospital’s Deputy Director responsible for clinical services, Dr Shaffi Mdala has commended Malawi Relief Fund for supporting the facility with new ENT equipment which include Autoclave, sterilizer, Anaesthesia machine and diathermy machines.

“Being a referral hospital, QECH has a huge load of patients, so the donation of the equipment will assist to increase the capacity to perform more surgeries,” said Dr Mdala.

He thinks more organizations will come in to support various surgical units at the facility so that patients get quality treatment on time.

Executive Director for Malawi Relief Fund UK, Mohammed Mangera hopes the K82 million equipment which his organisation has donated to ENT unit will assist to enhance delivery of quality health services.

“As you are aware, ENT here at QECH is the only fully functioning unit so there is a big need and demand. We decided to assist in order to ensure that patients are receiving quality health services,” said Mangera.

At the time of the donation, various international and local doctors were busy conducting operations at the ENT unit.
