The Malawi Red Cross Society says it has placed relief items, tents and four inflatable boats in some disaster-prone areas of the country in readiness for any flooding this rainy season.

The organization's Communication and Resource Mobilization Specialist, Felix Washon, told Zodiak on Friday that the two boats have been bought with financial support from the government to the tune of K26 million, while the other two came from donors.

“I wish to take this opportunity to thank the Government through the Treasury for timely monthly funding,” said Washon.

He added that it is this funding that has enabled the humanitarian organisation to reach out to volunteers with training and victims of various disasters.

“As Malawi Red Cross society, we are set to respond in case floods hit again this rainy season,” he explained, adding that the organisation requires special funding.

The Communication and Resource Mobilization Specialist further stated that they are currently strengthening first aid, search, and rescue teams by providing refresher training, including teams in Phalombe, Mulanje, and Blantyre.

“You know when disasters, mainly floods occur, they cause a lot of suffering, so the teams are also being trained in providing psycho-social support,” said the specialist.

Yen Mazalo and Cecilia Bonongwe from Phalombe and Gift Thomas Pedulo from Mulanje are some of the people that attended district search, rescue and first refresher trainings organized by Malawi Red Cross society.

They said the knowledge gained will assist them to act fast when disasters strike.

Meanwhile, Malawi is experiencing El-Nino meaning that the country will likely have some rains coupled with some incidents of dry spells.
