A local organization that advocates for the welfare of the elderly, Care and Share, has hinted on the need for the elderly to ensure that they are safe in the on -going rainy season.

Project Coordinator for Care and Share, Blessings Chikopa, told Zodiak Online on Wednesday in Phalombe that during the rainy season, most of the senior citizens risk lives owing to floods and wet walls of their houses; hence, the call.

Chikopa said the elderly should take the lead to ensure their safety to avert cases of drowning and collapsing of walls, among others.

“We are upbeat that the elderly will adhere to the call so that they should be safe during the rainy season,” said Chikopa.

He spoke this when the organization distributed six push bicycles to its volunteers and three bicycles to board members of the organization to ease mobility challenges when visiting the elderly and orphans in their impact area.

One of the volunteers, Mike Dulani, has described the provision of bicycles as timely, adding they walk long distances visiting the elderly and orphans.

According to Care and Share, the organization supports 180 elderly persons, 80 primary school learners and 45 secondary students.
