Red Cross Launches Goat Project in CZ

The Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) has launched a goat pass-on-project for some Cyclone Freddy survivors in Chiradzulu.

Speaking on Saturday during the launch of the program, at Mikolongwe where about 59 Cyclone Freddy survivor households from Mtauchira village have been relocated, MRCS director of programs and development, Prisca Chisala said the objective of the move is to boost the flood survivors economic livelihoods.

"We have have targeted to reach out to 30 households with five goats each which they would be able to pass [the offsprings] to the remaining 29 households.

"What we want to see is that by the end of the day the food security and nutrition status of the cyclone survivors have improved through the earnings of the livestock . Overall we expect an improvement in the economic status of the Cyclone Freddy survivors," said Chisala.

Village Headman Musa of the new village where the Cyclone Freddy survivors from Mtauchira were relocated to in Mikolongwe has hailed Malawi Red Cross Society's gesture, saying it will go a long in ensuring that the flood survivors becomes financially independent.

Chairperson for Chiradzulu District Council Councillor Charles Chigwenembe has expressed satisfaction with how the survivors in the district have become resilient, owing to support from various partners.

In March last year, almost the entire village of Mtauchira was buried in the mud slide and some people, now presumed to be dead, are still missing.
