EGENCO to Briefly Remove 100 Megawatts From National Power Grid

The Electricity Generation Company Malawi Limited (EGENCO) has announced that there will be an emergency outage of Nkula B power station from 15th to 19th December which will result in temporally removal of 100 megawatts from the national power grid.

The company says in a statement issued today that the emergency outage has come about to repair a damaged bypass pipe.

The communique indicates that the maintenance process will require complete shutdown of Nkula B power station.

Meanwhile, State institutions in the energy sector are yet to commence public hearings on a proposal by Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi-Escom and Power Market Limited-PML to have electricity base tariff adjusted upwards for the next four years.

Spokesperson for Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority-Mera Fitina Khonje told us that until today, the dates are not set for the exercise.

Social commentator, Victor Chipofya Jr says the process is necessary as it provides direction benefiting the two institutions and electricity consumers.
