The Council of Southern African Football Associations-COSAFA has announced the postponement of this year’s COSAFA Under-17 Women Championship which was scheduled to take place in Mauritius from April 17th to 26th.

A statement, signed by General Secretary Sue Destombes, says the cancellation follows a move by the government of Mauritius to close its boarders with other countries as well as effecting other travel restrictions in the wake of the spread of COVID-19.

Last week, the Confederation of African Football-CAF also announced the postponement of all 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in which the Flames would have been involved this month end.

On Monday, the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Jugnauth, outlined the nation’s plans to counter the spread of coronavirus which the World Health Organisation declared a global pandemic.

He stated that amongst other measures, the country has closed its borders with certain countries and effecting travel restrictions into the island.

According to Destombes, COSAFA is disappointed that the tournament has been postponed, but has to respect the decision which the government of Mauritius has taken to safeguard the lives of its citizens and visitors.

The Malawi Under-17 Women national football team was expected to make its maiden appearance at the event after being drawn together with the hosts, Eswatini and Botswana.

Last week, the Football Association of Malawi announced the appointment of Thom Mkorongo as the team’s head coach in readiness for the competition.

Meanwhile, COSAFA has chosen to remain mum on whether other competitions, including the senior men’s tournament and the Under-20 will take place.

Malawi was, for the second time in succession, chosen to host this year’s Under-17 men’s tournament this July.
