JAM Suspends Activities- COVID19

Judo association of Malawi has called off all judo activities until 30 April 2020 as a precautionary measure to tame the possible spread of COVID 19.

According to a statement from the association released today, the association has urged athletes to continue with personal training at home to keep fit.

Following government’s ban on public gatherings almost all major sporting disciplines including football and netball were forced to suspend their activities.

Some individual sporting disciplines were still doing their normal programs regardless of the ban.

On Monday, Judo Association of Malawi suspended all Judo activities as a precautionary measure to tame the possible spread of coronavirus.

According to a statement from the association, the athletes will still continue with personal training routines so that they keep fit.

Judo Association of Malawi general secretary Osborne Banda said the suspension is until 30 April but they will still follow governments guidelines on public gatherings considering that Judo is a sport of contact.

“We’ve been affected by the coronavirus pandemic in our judo family and we cannot risk the life of our athletes by allowing them to keep gathering for training, I think it’s only fair for us to suspend Judo activities to make sure they stay safe.

“Judo will still be there even after the coronavirus pandemic and we will continue from where we stopped.

"African Judo Federation has rescheduled the African championship to June 2020 in Morocco so hopefully by then everything will be fine and we will be able to send athletes to compete at the championship.

“We still have a chance to qualify for the Olympics and we can also look at this situation as a blessing in disguise because our athletes will have enough time to prepare for qualifying games."

In a related development Silver Strikers FC has also today suspended its training sessions in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to a statement from the club training sessions will resume at a later stage.
