BOXING; The Fuso Fighter Flattens The Buffalo

Former National Junior Welterweight Champion Byson ‘Fuso Fighter’ Gwayani put up a five-star performance Sunday night at M1 Centre Point in Lilongwe to stop Nigerian Hamid Olajide in the second minute of round 5 of a scheduled 8 round international non-title bout.

The fight started on a high note as boxers tried to explore each other’s weakness with jabs and occasional crosses taking centre stage.

Hamid aka the Buffalo displayed excellent footwork as he outboxed Malawi’s former Junior Welterweight champion in the first two rounds. However, Gwayani stepped up on the gas pedal in the third round punishing the Nigerian with punches to the body and catching his head on several occasions with a powerful cross.

Come round four the two boxers exchanged heavy punches at will as Gwayani pushed his opponent backwards to try and exploit his defensive armour. At the end of the round patrons were on their feet chanting Gwayani! Gwayani!

The fifth round saw Gwayani pushing further downstairs giving his opponent heavy body punches and trying his best to pin him to the ropes but the dextile Olajide move out of harm’s way only to be faced by a relentless Fuso fighter who had now started firing from all cylinders.

Two minutes into the round Gwayani cornered Olajide who failed to outmanoeuvre his opponent and succumbed to a right body punch which almost sent him out of the ring. After beating the count though, Olajide could not continue due to a bruised left rib sending the M1 Center Point patrons into a frenzy.

In a post-match interview with Zodiak, Olajide said he had no excuses for the loss and admitted that he faced a tough fighter in Byson Gwayani but was quick to demand a rematch.

Gwayani oh his part confessed that the Nigerian was a very tough opponent and thanked God for the victory. This was Byson Gwayani’s first home international fight improving his record to 24 fights with 18 wins and 4 losses whereas Olajide suffered a second loss in his career where he has fought seven times winning five and losing two.

In the main supporting event of the evening, Alexander Likande beat Hollis Kazembe via a judges’ split decision. Earlier on Dickson Saidi beat Gift Phiri on points as all judges unanimously scored in favour of Saidi, while Yohane Bande Stopped Robert Kachiza in round four and Alick Mbemba knocked out compatriot Maxwell Banda in round two.

This was a second boxing tournament organized since government allowed sports to commence in the country due to Covid-19 and it was staged by new kids on the block Kadsman Boxing Promotions.

The Director of the firm Aubrey Kadewere expressed satisfaction at the performance of the boxers and promised to bring more such tournaments in all the regions of the country in the near future.

Chazama Challenges Kammwamba

In another development former National Lightweight and Super lightweight champion, Salim Destroyer Chazama challenged current National Champion Israel Kammwamba.

According to Superior Boxing Promotions Director Japhet Majekete, his firm is willing to stage the title fight and another title fight involving current National Junior Middleweight Champion Charles Misanjo and challenger Kudakwache Nkhakamira Banda on a soon to be announced date.

The event was not short of drama though as Robert Kachiza was twice sent back by authorities to dress up in proper boxing attire. Kachiza at first donned basketball shorts and two-dollar snickers and faced a possible loss via disqualification but the board was lenient enough to allow him to go for a change of attire.
