The Standard Bank has recommenced ‘the be more race’ after a two year break due to Covid 19 pandemic.

The Bank’s Chief Executive Officer, Phillip Madinga, says they decided to host a 10-kilometer running competition within Blantyre city as one way of facilitating the country’s recovery process in both the economy and people’s wellness.

“It is an exciting moment for Standard Bank and all our stakeholders here in Blantyre. We are happy that the race is back and this is a warm up race as we are expecting to hold a 21-half marathon in Lilongwe on June 4, this year,” said Madinga.

The Chief Executive Officer added that this year’s theme is a road to recovery.

“You are aware that the pandemic had a huge negative impact on the economy and the wellness of people. We think through the race, people can come together, socialize and network to heal the calamities caused by Covid 19,” Madinga explained.

He further stated that the marathon is the flagship wellness and fitness program that the bank established to engage and connect with stakeholders from both private and government.

“When our bodies are fit, it helps to clear the mind and stay focused and be in a position to make better decisions,” he said.

During the Saturday race, Mathews Chikaonda from Chilobwe township emerged winner after covering a 10-kilometer distance in 36 minutes 18 seconds.

Chikaonda said he was excited to be part of the competition which exposed him to interacting with different people.

Standard Bank started the tournament in 2017.
