There are high prospects that a 20, 000 capacity Thyolo stadium will be completed by February 2023 following a nod by Public Procurement and Disposal Authority (PPDA) to revise the construction budget of the facility from K2.6 billion to K5. 6 billion, Thyolo District Commissioner, Douglas Moffat says.

Moffat says the revision was triggered by the recent devaluation of the Kwacha and the fuel hike.

"I am happy that after writing the PPDA for no objection, we have been authorized to proceed in that direction. So, all things being equal, the contractor is projecting that the stadium will be completed by February next year," Moffat said.

Thyolo DC believes once completed, the recreation facility would increase the council's revenue base, improve sports, health and business in the district.

Thyolo District Sports Association chairperson, Charles Mankhwala, says is delighted with the development, observing it's high time the stadium which commenced in 2018 was completed.

"But this time around, the council should do the needful, because in the absence of this facility, all sporting disciplines have gone down in the district", he said.

The stadium construction which was due for completion in 2020, has missed several deadlines.
