Karonga Votes in 3-Ward Byelection

Voters in Karonga district are today exercising their right to vote in by-elections taking place in three wards in the district.

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is holding local government by-election in Chilanga, Kapolo and Rukuru wards in the district.

Our reporter Adams Wundaninge says voters started queuing in the centers which opened at 6 am but in low numbers.

Hours later, he says the numbers are picking up.

According to the Presiding Officer at St Mary's Boys Primary School, Clemencia Kamwendo, several people have managed to cast their votes so too at Baka Lutheran School centre.

Turnout was not impressive at Lulindo Primary School at the start of voting at 6 am.

MEC Chairperson Justice Dr. Chifundo Kachale who was at Lulindo primary school at the start of voting said in most polling stations voting has started on a positive note.

The by-elections are taking place in Rukuru, Chilanga and Kaporo wards with a total of 21 candidates expected to battle it out.

Four are independent candidates. The rest represent different parties including MCP, DPP and Aford.

Over 68,000 people are expected to cast their ballot in the poll.
