MEJN Proposes 1 Percent Vat Hike

The Malawi Economic Justice Network (MEJN) is proposing a one percent increment of the Value Added Tax which will enable government raise additional resources for social protection programs such as the social cash transfer.

MEJN board member Andrew Kumbatira says the network's analysis of previous national budgets and the proposed 2024/2025 budget has established that there are many ultra-poor citizens who are not benefiting from the programs due to resource limitations hence the proposal.

He was speaking last night in Lilongwe during the 2024/2025 Budget Analysis Parliamentary Engagement where MEJN implored the parliamentarians to continue lobbying for more resources towards social protection programs.
