Girl to Appeal for Assault By Jealousy

A girl who was assaulted and paraded nude in Mulanje on suspicion she was in a love affairs with a married man says she will be heading back to the courts for higher compensation after a magistrate awarded her K60,000 only with an extra K40,000 to be paid to government.
Mrs. Grace Matenda was arrested on assault charges after she attacked and paraded the girl nake in public for suspecting that the minor was having a love affair with Mr. Matenda. On Friday last week, the district Magistrate’s court convicted and fined the woman K100, 000 on both counts with K60, 000 as compensation to the victim and K40, 000 to government. Mulanje police Spokesperson, Sub-Inspector Gresham Ngwira, however, had then said was satisfied with both the ruling and the sentence. “As state what we expect when we take suspects to court is to secure conviction which we have managed to get and we are happy with this,” said Sub-Inspector Ngwira. But the girl’s uncle, John Saidi, told Zodiak Online that the fine is just too little compared to the loss of dignity and trauma she has suffered. “Yes am happy that this woman was convicted but the fine is just too little. Definitely we will appeal against the sentence,” said Saidi. Gender activist, Emma Kaliya, said the conduct by Mrs. Matenda was a violation of the girls’ rights and that she deserves stiffer punishment not a mere K100, 000 fine. “You know apart from insulting her modesty, the girl was psychologically tortured and with village life, she will be discriminated in a society for a long period even remain and even in future some men will not propose her for marriage,” said Kaliya. Kalira has backed the family idea to appeal against the fines. The case was prosecuted at the time the world was commemorating 16 days of gender activism.
