The government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, has lifted the ban on the importation of maize from Tanzania.

The ban was imposed due to the presence of Maize Lethal Necrosis Disease in that country.

Minister Sam Kawale says this follows constant communication with the Tanzanian Plant Health and Pesticides Authority to share information on the prevalence of the disease.

Kawale said from the discussion and reports, the Tanzania authorities have submitted evidence and demonstrated that the disease has been contained.

Meanwhile, agriculture expert Dr Tamani Nkhono Mvula has welcomed the development.

On the other hand, Tanzania has also importation of maize and soya from Malawi.

It had imposed a maize import ban on suspicion that it could be contaminated with GMO traits while soya from Malawi was suspected to have been infested with a disease.
