The Beit Cure International Hospital in Malawi says it will double surgeries conducted at its facility in Blantyre in the next three years.

The hospital which is specialized in treating the orthopedic needs of children currently, conducts about 1, 300 surgeries per year, according to its Executive Director, Elly Chemey.

“For the past 10 years, we have been conducting about 1, 300 surgeries, but we want to double the numbers to 2, 600 or in the next three years,” explained Chemey in an interview on Saturday in Mangochi after the hospital successfully conducted outreach screenings in health facilities.

Chemey said currently they have already started improving their hospital, increasing number of human resources, getting new equipment and cementing their working relationship with government.

He said the move will assist them to reach to many vulnerable children mainly in the hard-to-reach areas who are suffering with physical disabilities that are treatable.

Dr. Henry Chibowa Jnr, Director of Health and Social Services for Mangochi district, where within days the organization screened 1, 002 children and booked 316 for surgeries at its hospital in Blantyre, welcomed the development, saying it is difficult for the hospital to conduct such services.

“Mangochi is unique, the distances are long, and not just long, the terrain is bad as well. So, it’s very hard for these kids to access such services and now that with the coming of this hospital, it has helped us to take services closer to them,” explain Dr. Chibowa.

The 316 Children that have been booked for surgeries after doctors detects various physical disabilities including clubfoot’s, will go to Cure hospital in Blantyre at a date to be advised with their guardians, on the hospitals bill.
