Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, has noted with concern that over 20,000 people in Chikwawa are failing to access health care after fire gutted Mfera Health Centre on March 16, 2023.

“Experts have since condemned the building. We would like to see services resume as quickly as possible,” explained Chiponda.

Chiponda over the weekend visited Nchalo Hunger Clinic and Mfera Health facilities but also various flood survivors camps in Nsanje and Chikwawa districts to appreciate challenges related to health care provision as a result of Tropical Cyclone Freddy.

Janet Moyo, a Medical Assistant at Mfera Health centre, told Zodiak Online that “the fire started from an electrical fault. Prior to the incident we had no power for five days. We attend to 250-350 clients in the OPD on a daily basis,” she said.

She further said due to loss of a TV microscope, “we are unable to provide TB services, patients are required to go to other facilities.”

Chiponda also visited Nchalo Health Centre which was hit by Tropical Cyclone Freddy induced floods where she assured medical practitioners that efforts will be made to ensure services resume at the facility, “as soon as possible.”
