Happy Feet Play Center Urges Malawians to Support Needy Children in The Festive Season
A call has been made to Malawians to demonstrate responsibility in supporting needy children during the Christmas in order to reduce some challenges that they are experiencing.
Speaking after a Christmas party with the children at Chileka in Blantyre on Saturday, Managing Director of Happy Feet Play Center, Majorie Banda said as the Christmas approaches, there is need to show love and care for all children including the vulnerable ones.
Banda added that as part of celebrating the birth of Jesus, the center brings together children every year to interact with them and have fun.
“We decided to have an early Christmas party with the children to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. We are happy that the children had some fun playing different games together,” said Banda.
Apart from sharing some gifts, the children also took part in some unique activities including brain teaser.
Over 50 children attended the party. This comes when many children are still struggling to get a better life and attend school in Malawi with some seen loitering around and causing trouble in the country's cities.
Further to it, 16.7 percent of children under 18 in the country are orphans and vulnerable children (OVC). Nearly one million OVC have lost one or both parents to Aids.
According to UNICEF, 20 percent of Malawian households are looking after OVC and many of these families are headed by girls, women and elderly women.
