Commercial Court Ready to Open Soon - Judiciary

There is a high expectation of speedy trials on financial crimes as the country's judiciary says the commercial court project is almost through and will be opened soon.

The construction of the commercial court in Blantyre started in 2009 and stalled in between the years.

In 2023/24 national budget, parliament allocated K914 million for the completion of the remaining structures at the court building and also K500 million towards the rehabilitation of the Supreme Court of Appeal building in Blantyre whose contract sum is about K405 million.

Meanwhile, Supreme Court and High Court Registrar Kondwani Banda told Zodiak Online currently there is tremendous progress on the projects, though he noted some delays by the contractors to conclude works.

"The remaining allocated funds will go towards construction of a fence for the High Court Criminal Registry and Chief Resident Magistrate Centre in Lilongwe's Area 3," he said.

Meanwhile, social commentator Wonderful Mkhutche has hailed the government for the project, saying the need for the commercial court is long overdue to ensure speedy trial of the financial lawsuits in the country.

"The country needed the commercial court a long time ago to ensure speedy trial of the financial lawsuits. As we know such cases are difficult and require time and in turn, they disturb other cases," Mkhutche said.

Recently, the judiciary also indicated that construction of its office complex in Lilongwe was expected to commence soon after the procurement process.

The parliament allocated K1.6 billion for the designing of the office.
