Sapitwa B girls Rugby Team on Saturday won the Africathletics under 14 rugby 7 tournament held at Mulanje Golf Club.

The team beat their sisters, Sapitwa A in the finals after the two sister teams defeated Luchenza and Blantyre teams.

Coach of the winning team Rochester Mulendo told Zodiak Online that adequate preparations helped his charges to win the tournament.

"As you can see, the girls are young and they easily and quickly grasp the techniques," said Mulendo.

He said the girls started training touch rugby, then tug rugby and now they are expecting to train them tackle rugby.

Founder and president of Africathletics, an Italian Sports Organization, Enrico Tirel said the tournament was organized with an aim of developing rugby among the rural girls.

"We started with Monkey bay in Mangochi and now we are here, in Mulanje and our objective is to develop rugby in rural areas," said Enrico.

He said the participating girls have also been enrolled in English, Mathematics and Computer classes that are conducted at the golf club twice a week in order to balance both education and sport.

Manager of Mulanje Golf Club Jacob Chunda Kazawala said they want to make the facility an academy of different sporting activities such squash, rugby, tennis, volleyball and basketball.

"We offer accommodation to the visiting volunteers from Italy, food and body building facilities to the players," said Kazawala.

Chairperson of the Southern Region Rugby Committee Allster Momba hailed the Africathletics for organizing the tournament, adding that he would be glad if such competitions are being held in all districts across the region.

The Sapitwa A and B girls received bags from the Aficathletics.
