Residents in Mchinji Spend Months Without Electricity
Residents around Mkanda trading centre and the surrounding areas in Mchinji district have spent over three months without electricity, following a faulty ESCOM transformer.
For example, business operators in the affected areas of Mkanda, Chawala, Sunama and Gumba, claim that their businesses have gone down such that they are failing to generate income to support their families and pay house rentals.
Robert Banda, a welder plies his trade at Mkanda, a trade centre in Mchinji says for three months now, his business has ground to a halt because of absence of Escom power. Banda can neither fend for his home nor pay rentals.
Another resident in the area, Jane Chipalasa, a single mother says she now can't raise money from her business to support her children.
Residents of the trade centre have now ganged up to petition the electricity distributor Escom on why they have had to live in the dark for 3 months for no explained reason even when they have officially reported the matter.
Meanwhile, ESCOM has bemoaned vandalism which is responsible for some of the hiccups across the country.
ESCOM public relations manager, Innocent Chitosi, says government has provided 150 transformers to replace all faulty ones adding that the problem will be rectified by end of this week.
