CSAT Citizen Engagement Manager Moffat Mpweya-Phiri told Zodiak Online that active participation in such development matters compels duty bearers to undertake projects that benefit locals. 

“Community empowerment remains crucial in every stage of project implementation as it enhances transparency and accountability,” she said. 

He, however, challenged the citizenry to avoid engaging in conflict with duty bearers when monitoring projects as it defeats the whole purpose of accountability.

Ministry of Local Government Deputy Director Darwin Pangani says the government is encouraging district councils to always be accountable to the communities they are serving. 

"The authorities are charging councils to be accountable and transparent to the citizens in all matters relating to funds and projects,” he said. 

CSAT with support from National Endowment Democracy (NED) has intensified its accountability activities under a project to strengthen governance accountability through citizen oversight in three districts of Dowa, Machinga and Mangochi, targeting three traditional authorities in each of the districts.

NED pumped in U$149, 688 for the period running from July 2022 to June 2024 aimed at creating vigilant communities with an amplified voice to hold duty bearers accountable to enhance improved public service delivery in local councils.
