Drug Shortage Hits Thyolo District Hospital

Amid reports of shortage of essential medical drugs in public health facilities, Thyolo District Hospital is reported to have run out of antibiotics.
The District Health Spokesperson, Fanuel Makina, says while the district hospital has in stock drugs such as Anti-Retroviral drugs (ARVs), anti-malarial drugs, ant-TB and other painkillers, there is acute shortage of antibiotics.
“Every month the district hospital places orders of all essential drugs to Central Medical Store Trust (CMST) but the supply has always been very low,” said Makina.
Spokesperson for CMST, Herbert Chandilanga, acknowledged low supply of antibiotics and other medical items to public health facilities.
Said Chandilanga; “it’s true supply has been inadequate but I’m sure the situation will normalize in few days to come as the Trust has already started receiving medical supplies that include antibiotics from its suppliers.”
