Philanthropist Intensifies Relief Items Distribution in Zomba
Amid escalating hunger fears in the country, a certain philanthropist in Zomba district, Hoppings Chabwera Masanga has intensified distribution of relief items mainly maize flour to some vulnerable households in the district.
Speaking when he launched the food distribution exercise yesterday in the area of Group Village Headman Namphimba, Sub Traditional Authority Chimbalanga in the Area, Masanga said he intends to reach out to almost 15 thousand vulnerable households in the area between now and March next year.
He added that he intends to use about K95 million for the food distribution exercise mainly in Zomba Ntonya constituency.
“The situation is really worrisome. Just imagine, some of the people in the area are currently surviving on mangoes. There is no way they can be productive with that status quo”, said Masanga.
On her part , Group Village Headman Namphimba of the area said the hunger situation in the area has been exacerbated due to the unavailability of an ADMARC depot in the area which forces people to travel to Zomba town which is a very long distance from the area for them to buy maize.
Meanwhile Masanga who also runs Youth Alliance, a local Non Governmental Organization aimed at empowering the youths in the area has also helped in the renovation of a borehole in the area of Village Headman M'bwana Tradition Authority Chikowi in the district to ease access to clean and potable water challenges in the area.
The prevailing dry spells due to El-Nino weather phenomenon has raised escalating hunger fears among most people in the country.
