CM Joseph Nyambalo Shines at Octagon Tower Chess Tournament

Candidate Master (CM) Joseph Nyambalo, was on Saturday night crowned winner of Octagon Tower Chess Tournament in Mangochi district.

Nyambalo who got a medal and K100,000.00 cash, amassed 8 points, in a game where some country's top Chess players like FIDE Master (FM) Joseph Mwale, CM Chiletso Chipanga, CM Alfred Chinthere, participated.

Speaking after the game, CM Nyambalo thanked the organizer of the tournament, saying the country has untapped talents in the game of chess, and can only discovered through such tournaments.

Martin Nyamilandu, chairperson for southern region chess  league, also said was happy the sponsors.

"We have companies that are failing to sponsor this game, but here is an individual, sponsoring the game," said Nyamilandu, extending a call to other people to do the same.

Nyamilandu said once such competitions are held regularly, the national team will always have a cream of players.

Owner of Octagon Tower, an entertainment place at Namiasi in Mangochi, Dr. Kondwani Mamba, who sponsored to the tournament to a tune of K350,000.00 said is happy that the tournament has been recognized by country's top chess gurus.

According to Dr. Mamba his intention is to bring the game to everyone even those in rural areas.

"You see, this is Mangochi, a district and not a city. This game has been associated with the rich, elite, people in towns and not places like here," said Dr. Mamba, who promised more sponsorships in a near future.
