Mulanje Police Station Teams Champions of South East Commissioner's Trophy
South East Police region has on Wednesday presented prizes to the winners of the Commissioner's trophy.
Both in football and netball, Mulanje police station are the champions and have taken home K350, 000 and K250, 000 respectively.
South east region football and netball teams are the runners-up that have received K200, 000 and K150, 000 each in the tournament.
The region's commissioner, Chikondi Chingadza said the trophy has enhanced security, discipline among police officers and relationship with the community.
She has since disclosed that Mulanje police station and south-east police region football and netball teams will compete in the Inspector General's Trophy soon.
"It has been very nice and entertaining journey because we have seen commitment from the officers. Above all, it has enhanced interaction and security. This was a preparation for the Inspector General's trophy, but as the region we shall continue it," she said.
Chairperson for the trophy steering committee, Deputy commissioner of police, Owen Maganga said the journey was tough, saying it has unearthed rare talents in the region.
National Sports Council Administration manager Henry Mereka said the government ought to support the initiative.
"I was suggesting to the commissioner that this competition must be sustained and the way to do that, is probably to have a national competition. In that way, we will sustain the cream that has been identified," he suggested.
The trophy commenced in May this year and about 180 goals have been scored in football category while over 1500 baskets were shot.
