Airtel Malawi has come out in the open, saying it suspects a deliberate act of sabotage against its operations.
This comes after the network company suffered lost internet connectivity on Tuesday due to the vandalism of local fiber cables.
In a statement released this evening, the company's Brand and Public Relations Officer, Norah Chavula Chirwa, said the network company suffers multiple fiber cuts every month and is mostly targeted.
“These acts are not just attacks on Airtel; they are attacks on all of us. On students trying to study Online, on families staying connected, on businesses trying to grow and on customers trying to live their digital lives,” says part of the statement.
The statement says they are working with law enforcement officers to track down the perpetrators.
ICT Association of Malawi General manager Andrew Kamwendo described the act as a set back to the country’s development.
“This has affected not only Airtel, in the past some other organizations such as Electricity Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM)also complained about it. This is worrisome, because it affects communication and development in general,” he said.
Airtel Malawi has pledged to offer a reward to anyone who provides credible information that will lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
