Calls Grow for Completion of Cape Maclear Road Reconstruction

Users of the Cape Maclear road have asked the government to complete the reconstruction of the road, saying that the remaining section is currently in a poor state.

Oden Chatuwa, a motorcyclist, told Zodiak Online that the road is full of potholes which makes travel difficult and poses a risk to road users.

Chituwa added that the road requires urgent attention, as it is used by both local and international visitors traveling to Cape Maclear to explore places of interest such as Mwala wa Mphini, Lake Malawi and the surrounding islands.

"If you see the condition of the road, you wouldn’t believe that every day both local and international visitors use it on their way to Cape Maclear, bringing in foreign exchange,” said Chituwa.

Meanwhile, Roads Authority Senior Public Relations Officer, Alice Chinthochi acknowledged the challenge, disclosing that the authority is currently using a phased approach and will complete the reconstruction once resources become available.

“The other aim of the phased approach is to construct durable roads,” Chinthochi added.

On July 22, 2024, former President Lazarus Chakwera opened only a 10-kilometre section of the road from the Cape Maclear turnoff.
