Thyolo Man Jailed 8 Years for Acts Intended to Cause Grievous Harm

The Midima Second Grade Magistrate Court in Limbe has sentenced Mike Kafere, 37, to 8 years imprisonment with hard labour for committing acts intended to cause grievous harm.

Kafere, from Kapyepye Village, Bvumbwe in Thyolo district, pleaded guilty to the charge, which contravenes Section 235(a) of the Penal Code.

According to State Prosecutor Sub-Inspector Annie Kamwendo, Kafere attacked the victim with a metal bar and threw him into a river on January 6, 2026, causing broken jaws and a deep cut on the upper right eye.

"The convict's acts posed a death threat to the victim, who was hospitalized for over a month," Kamwendo said.

In mitigation, Kafere prayed for leniency, but Magistrate Patricia Ntawali concurred with the state, saying a stiffer punishment was necessary.

"His acts were brutal and showed no regard for human life," Ntawali said, slapping Kafere with the 8-year jail-term.
