Water For People Set to Improve Sanitation in Neno

In a bid to promote sanitation in Neno district, Water for people has trained local Masons in construction of corbelled latrines.

Seven Masons have completed a five day training in construction of improved pit latrines, which took place at Zalewa  from 24th through 28th March 2026.

This is one of latrine technologies suitable for rocky areas where digging pits of 1.5 meters is a challenge or there is high risk of collapse due to soil instability.

This is being implemented under the rural sanitation revolving fund project, a project that is aimed at making sanitation both affordable and lucrative.

Under this approach water for people is partnering with local shop owners to sale sanitation facilities such as Sato stools, Sato pans, orissa pans and handwashing facilities at a subsidized price.

The main focus of the  project is to encourage construction of improved latrines and upgrading of basic latrines to improved latrines.

WASH project officer from water for people, Chisomo Magelegele says the project is aiming at facilitating 600 improved latrines in Traditional Authorities Symon and Mlauli of Neno district.

Currently the project is being implemented in six (6) group village headmen of Somisomi, Mtengula,  Mlauli,Msalawatha, Symon, and Kasamba.

Magelegele said that good sanitation is key to improved health, dignity and well being and  adoption of rulral sanitation revolving fund is envisaged to contribute to attainment of SDG 6.2, which calls for attainment of safely managed sanitation by 2030"

One of the Masons who has benefited from the training, Frazer Lekani is optimistic that his new found skills, will broaden his horizons in his construction work.

"This is business for me, I will be able to work on people's latrines and earn money while helping to improve sanitation and hygiene in my community and consequently help to improve health and well-being in the community.

WASH focal person for Neno District,  Mathews Chikunkhuzeni, has  commended Water for People for the support and expressed optimism to see community sanitation for the district  improved.
