The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development through the Local Government Service Commission (LGSC) has promoted some officers in local councils who were working in acting capacities.

Some positions include acting directors of health and social services, agriculture, environment and natural resources, education, youth and sports and they are now full directors.

Some promotion letters Zodiak has seen indicated that the offers are conditional upon physically taking up positions within 30 days of receiving the offer letters.

But some quarters are saying that some officers that have been promoted are linked to politicians from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

In an interview with Zodiak on Thursday, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Muhlabase Mughogho, said the assertions are mere speculations, saying promotions have been made on merit.

“Qualifications and experiences are what the LGSC considered when promoting the officers,” said Mughogho.

She said promotions will be done in phases and she said in this phase, 180 key positions in councils that have been vacant for a long period have been filled.

“The promotions are in line with decentralization where functions, human and material resources have to be devolved,” said Mughogho.

District Commissioner in Mulanje Michael Chimbalanga said the promoted officers have now been motivated.

“These officers now have better grades that go together with adjusted perks and definitely they will be working with dedication,” said Chimbalanga.
