Learners and teachers at Ligowe Community Day Secondary school in Neno have warned that science education standards will continue to dwindle at the school as it has now operated for 13 years without a science laboratory and library.

According to the learners, this is putting them at a disadvantage as they cannot ably compete with other schools that have the facilities.

Ashraf Jafali and Previous Majawa have told Zodiak over the weekend, during their form four gala that they are afraid of passing with good grades in the forthcoming Malawi School Certificate of Education Examination (MSCE).

"We have no science laboratory and a library, these scenarios are making us fail to both understand what science is all about and we can even read during our free time, there is no library", they said.

Collaborating these sentiments, headteacher for the school, Evalisto Chamasowa says well-wishers are failing to assist the school with books as they have no storage facility and that the school was promised a laboratory five years ago under the government program of constructing the same in all CDSSs.

He said that they have never heard a word from the authorities since the last time they came to access the school and this is affecting their operations for the exams.

He then said that "it is our expectation that the facilities being constructed urgently as well wishers fail to give us books and equipment as they feel they will be wasted due to no proper structures to house them".

But in response, Neno District Chief Education officer (CEO) Sonnex Likharuwe, assured the school management that the two facilities will be constructed soon without specifying a date.

"They will have them soon. The program will resume and we have a number of CDSS's to be featured like Ligowe and Chifunga CDSS's", said Likharuwe.

Meanwhile member of parliament for Neno South constituency Mark Katsonga Phiri has emphasized on the need for the government to introduce Commerce and Economics subjects from primary to secondary school level if the country is to ably achieve the Mw2063 economic blueprint.

He said that countries like Singapore have developed due to massive attention in commerce and economics classes introduced to the students from Junior level up to secondary.

"I have been talking to former heads of state of this country for the introduction of these subjects including the incumbent, because I believe the people must be aware of how economics of a country works", said the MP.

Katsonga for example said that if these subjects are popularised, people from all levels of industrial production will understand what they are doing in a sense they will be able to produce quality products for both internal and external use.

In his words of encouragement, Katsonga has awarded 13 learners at Ligowe Community Day Secondary school who had done well in class during their four year stay with a sum of 170 thousand kwacha to share among themselves.

Speaking earlier, Neno Mission Catholic Parish priest father Peter Phambana encouraged the learners to utilize the remaining time for more studying and desist from thinking of early marriages.

"It is "stupid" to start thinking about marriage now. There is nothing good in marriage if you have not achieved your full education up to tertiary education. So, work hard", he said.

As a motivation, Neno district council Chief Education officer Sonnex Likharuwe has challenged the learners of a 300-thousand-kwacha monetary price to be used in preparation to all that will score below 10 points in the forthcoming MSCE examination.
