Excitement and jubilation filled the National Assembly on Wednesday as Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator Sameer Suleman was declared the new Speaker of Parliament following a tightly contested election.

Suleman clinched victory with 134 out of 221 votes, defeating his closest rival, Peter Dimba of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), who garnered 85 votes. Two legislators were absent, while one abstained.

Before the final vote, Suleman also triumphed over fellow DPP members Lasken Vigaro and Sandram Scot, who had entered the race but were eliminated in earlier rounds - cementing his position as the party’s preferred choice for the top parliamentary post.

The announcement, made by Clerk of Parliament Fiona Kalemba, was met with thunderous applause and cheers across the chamber, marking a dramatic conclusion to what had been a tense and closely watched election.

Following the declaration, Deputy Chief Justice Lovemore Chikopa, SC, administered the oath of office, officially ushering Suleman into his new role as Speaker.

In his acceptance speech, Suleman expressed gratitude to members of Parliament for their confidence in his leadership.

“I am deeply humbled by the trust this House has placed in me,” he said. “I pledge to serve with diligence, integrity, and impartiality. My focus will be on fostering unity among members and ensuring that parliamentary business is conducted with respect and order.”

The DPP further consolidated its parliamentary influence as Victor Musowa, MP for Mulanje Bale, was elected First Deputy Speaker.

Meanwhile, the United Democratic Front (UDF) celebrated a major victory as Esther Jolobala, MP for Machinga East, went unopposed and was duly confirmed as Second Deputy Speaker - a development observers say highlights the party’s growing prominence and bipartisan appeal.

Speaking after the swearing-in ceremony, Justice Chikopa urged the newly elected leaders to uphold the dignity and independence of Parliament.

“Leadership in this House demands fairness, patience, and commitment to service,” he said. “You must discharge your duties with integrity and diligence.”

In his congratulatory message, president President and DPP leader Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika commended the newly elected parliamentary leaders, saying their election reflected confidence in their proven leadership abilities.

“The First Lady and I extend our heartfelt congratulations to Honourables Sameer Suleman, Victor Musowa and Esther Jolobala on their election to the office of the Speaker, First Deputy Speaker and Second Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly respectively,” Professor Mutharika said.

“In Honourables Suleman, Musowa and Jolobala, I see a capable team to steer deliberations in the House for the betterment of our mother Malawi. To you Honourable Speakers, this is your moment to serve and shine. Be assured of my full support as you assume office as heads of the legislative arm of government. Once again, congratulations and best wishes.”

Political analyst Gorge Chaima says “Suleman’s victory underscores the DPP’s resurgence as a dominant force in Parliament, while the UDF’s strong showing reflects its steady return to relevance in Malawi’s political landscape.”
