Mumba to Remain Independent In Parliament

Mumba: I will remain as an independent legislator in Parliament.

Mzimba Central legislator Vitumbiko Mumba, who was running mate to MCP president Lazarus Chakwera in the just-ended elections, says he will remain an independent Member of Parliament in the August House.

Mumba told Zodiak Online at Parliament this morning that he wants to serve the people who voted for him as an independent legislator, stressing that his political mandate and survival lie with his constituents.

“I haven’t heard anything yet from the MCP. I would rather respect the will of my people in Mzimba Central Constituency. That’s why I’m focusing on serving their wishes. None of my constituents, including chiefs, has complained about my sitting on the independent benches,” he said.

The former Cabinet Minister says he will only consult his constituents if they ask him to consider joining any political grouping, particularly the MCP, in Parliament.

However, Mumba maintains that he still remains a member of the former ruling party.

Mumba's decision has received praise from political scientist George Chaima, who says the move reflects a commitment to democratic values and constituency interests.

"This is a good decision because it shows the relationship he has with his people. They voted for him on an independent ticket, for him to move it depends on the same people," said Chaima.

However, Mumba maintains that he still remains a member of the former ruling party.
