Silver Strikers Women continued their flawless start to the National Bank of Malawi National Women’s Premiership, edging Ascent Academy 2-1 in a tightly contested match at the Ascent Ground on Sunday. The result lifted them to the top of the standings with maximum points.
The opening half saw both sides cancel each other out, going into the break at 0-0. Just moments after the restart, Deborah Henry put Silver ahead in the 46th minute. The lead lasted barely three minutes before Leticia Chinyamula struck for the hosts to level the scores. Henry, however, was not done—netting her second in the 61st minute to secure the win for the visitors.
Silver Strikers Head Coach Andrew Chikhosi praised his side’s determination against a familiar foe.
“This was far from an easy win. Ascent are a very strong side and whenever we meet, it’s more like a rivalry. I’m proud of the way my players worked hard to get this result,” he said.
Ascent’s Thom Nkolongo lamented defensive lapses that allowed Silver to dominate in the second half.
“We didn’t handle the game well after the break. Our defense opened up too much, and Silver capitalized. But the league is long—we will address our mistakes and come back stronger,” Nkolongo explained.
The win gives Silver Strikers nine points from three matches, while Ascent drop to third with six points from two victories and a single defeat.
In Mzuzu, Civil Service Women’s hunt for their maiden win of the campaign continued after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Moyale Sisters at Mzuzu Stadium—Civil’s third consecutive stalemate.
Civil went ahead in the 21st minute when Vitumbiko Mkandawire fired home from a Bernadetter Nyenga assist. But just two minutes into the second half, Moyale’s Tricia Nkhata found the net, delivering the hosts their first goal and point of the season.
Civil coach Linda Kasenda rued missed opportunities.
“We created enough chances to win this match, but we simply didn’t convert them. That’s what we need to fix ahead of the next game,” she said.
Moyale coach John Chimwala was encouraged by his team’s progress.
“We started the league poorly, but now we’ve managed to get a point. It shows we are adapting and improving,” he said.
Civil sit sixth with three points from three draws, while Moyale are ninth with a single point from three outings.
Earlier in Mzuzu, Mighty Wanderers Women bounced back from defeat in style, overturning a halftime deficit to beat Topik Academy 3-1.
Topik took the lead in the 13th minute through Rita Mwale and held it until the break. The second half belonged to the Nomads—Faluna Umali’s cross forced an own goal from Atupele Phiri in the 51st minute, Tawina Kawaga added the second ten minutes later, and Atuweni Njilima sealed the comeback win.
Nomads coach Thom Kazembe credited his players for their second-half fightback but criticized the officiating.
“The first half was tough for us, partly because the officiating seemed to go against us. But at halftime, we gave the girls clear instructions, and they executed perfectly,” he said.
Topik’s Levi Mhone admitted his side lost focus after their opener.
“We played well before the break, but after scoring, we dropped our concentration and kept losing possession. It’s a lesson for us,” he said.
The result moves Wanderers to fourth place with six points from two wins and one loss. Topik remain rooted at the bottom with no points from three games.
Week three produced a season-high 14 goals, taking the total to 38 so far. Silver Strikers Women and Kukoma Ntopwa Queens are the only teams still with a perfect record. Civil Service Women, MDF Lioness, MK Academy, Moyale Sisters, and Topik Academy are all yet to taste victory.
Ascent Academy’s Leticia Chinyamula leads the scoring race with four goals, followed by Kondawo Banda (Kukoma Ntopwa), Deborah Henry (Silver Strikers), and Mayamiko Mkandawire (Ascent Academy), who each have three.
