Govt Challenges Media to Drive Malawi-2063 Narrative

Minister of Information and Communications Technology Shadric Namalomba has challenged Malawian journalists to champion a “story of hope” that aligns with the country’s long-term aspirations under the Malawi 2063 vision.

Speaking in Lilongwe at the launch of the 2026 SADC Media Awards, the Minister said the media must help shape a confident, development-driven national image that positions Malawi as a regional achiever.

“Malawi is a nation of achievers,” Namalomba said. “Our journalists must project a positive and investment-friendly image of the country. Your stories should inspire hope and confidence as we pursue the Malawi 2063 vision.”

He stressed that the SADC Media Awards offer Malawi a strategic platform for visibility within the region, saying positive, well-researched journalism is central to enhancing the country’s standing.

Namalomba also reaffirmed the government's commitment to media freedom, noting that a well-supported press is essential for democratic growth.

“The government will continue to support journalists with access to information and an enabling environment. A strong, independent and development-focused media sector is vital for national transformation,” he said.

Although Malawi did not secure any first-prize positions in the 2025 awards, the country earned significant recognition after three journalists, Roy Nkosi in Photojournalism, Innocent Kumchedwa in Radio, and Kumbukani Barbra Kajumie in Television, finished as runners-up, each receiving US$1,000.

Namalomba said the achievements show Malawi’s competitiveness at regional level but urged journalists to push further.

“We can and must do better. The talent is here, now we need ambition and commitment to carry Malawi to first place in 2026,” he said.

National Adjudication Committee Member Innocent Chitosi encouraged journalists to take full advantage of the awards and deepen their understanding of SADC integration themes.

“We want to see more Malawian journalists shining at regional level. This competition is an opportunity to showcase our country’s achievements. We will intensify sensitisation so journalists understand what makes a strong submission,” he said.

Past SADC Media Awards winner and 2025 runner-up Innocent Kumchedwa of Zodiak Broadcasting Station, has since advised journalists to familiarize themselves with SADC protocols and development frameworks.

“The strongest entries are those grounded in SADC priorities,” Kumchedwa said. “Journalists must understand the protocols Malawi has ratified. These awards help us tell Malawi’s development story within the region.”

The push for development-focused reporting is tied to Malawi 2063, which places emphasis on agricultural commercialization, industrialization and urbanization.
