The Ministry of Homeland Security has ordered the Malawi Police Service to urgently conclude and release findings on the murder of Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) doctor, Victoria Bobe, who was shot dead during a suspected robbery at her Chigumula home, Blantyre, early Tuesday.
Homeland Security Minister Peter Mukhito told Parliament same Tuesday that he has directed Inspector General of Police Richard Luhanga to produce a full report by the end of the week, emphasizing the government’s duty of “complete transparency” to Dr. Bobe’s family and the nation.
“We are intensifying efforts to ensure all firearms in the country are properly registered,” Mukhito said, adding that the killing highlights the need for stronger security in homes, workplaces, and business areas.
Preliminary police reports indicate that armed attackers broke into Dr Bobe’s compound, overpowered a security guard, demanded money, and shot her in the head before fleeing with her laptop and bags. Investigations are ongoing.
Security expert Sheriff Kaisi described the killing as “a wake-up call for urgent, coordinated action,” warning that it exposes weaknesses in neighbourhood security systems and urging authorities to strengthen intelligence, patrols, and community policing.
The incident has sparked national outrage and renewed calls for tougher crime-prevention measures.
In Parliament, several MPs pressed the minister to address broader security challenges. Blantyre Soche-Zingwangwa MP Fred Penjani Kalua praised Mukhito’s swift action but cautioned that the case has exposed systemic gaps.
“Dr Bobe’s tragic death has opened a Pandora’s box of security challenges that cannot be ignored," said Kalua. "This incident highlights the need for strengthened police operations and resource allocation that urgently need to be addressed.”
Moses Kunkuyu, MP for Dedza Mulunduni, also urged authorities to prioritise citizen safety, stressing the need for proactive measures and improved coordination between law enforcement and local leaders to prevent similar tragedies.
Dr Bobe, a gynaecologist at QECH and lecturer at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, has been mourned across the medical fraternity as a dedicated professional whose loss is “deeply felt.”
