IOM Calls for Inclusive Sustainability Efforts in Malawi

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has urged the Government of Malawi and its development partners to adopt more inclusive approaches to sustainability, emphasizing that no one should be left behind—particularly those living in extreme poverty. This call aligns with the broader vision of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Alina Zalewski, Head of the Programme Support Unit for IOM Malawi, made the remarks in Lilongwe on Tuesday during the launch of Standard Bank Malawi’s 2024 Sustainability Report.

Zalewski stressed the need to ensure that national climate and disaster risk reduction strategies are inclusive and responsive to the diverse needs of vulnerable populations. She highlighted the importance of developing government and institutional policies that consider gender, age, and ability in order to build stronger, more resilient communities.

“The principle of leaving no one behind means we must reach the most vulnerable—those often overlooked in development planning,” said Zalewski.

Standard Bank Malawi Chief Executive Officer Philip Madinga, speaking at the same event, described the report launch as a reaffirmation of the bank’s commitment to supporting Malawi’s economic transformation. He noted that the bank’s sustainability initiatives are closely aligned with the country’s key development priorities—Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining (ATM).

“Our strategy is anchored in sustainable development,” said Madinga. “We have built our framework around six key drivers that directly support both the SDGs and Malawi’s Vision 2063.”

The 2024 Sustainability Report outlines the bank’s impact areas and its strategic focus on driving inclusive growth, environmental responsibility, and long-term value for stakeholders.
