MBS Cracks Down on Fake Fertilizers to Protect Farmers

The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that farmers purchase the right fertilizers this growing season in order to maximize agricultural productivity.

During an inspection at one of the fertilizer companies in Lilongwe, Senior Certification Officer Symon Manyinda said some unscrupulous traders continue to take advantage of farmers by selling uncertified fertilizers, which negatively affect crop yields.

“We urge farmers to buy certified fertilizers bearing the MBS sticker. They must also ensure that both the quality and quantity of the fertilizer are not compromised. We encourage them to report any suspicious products to MBS,” said Manyinda.

During the visit to Malawi Fertilizer Company, MBS officials advised the company to improve its stacking system to prevent contamination and maintain product quality.

Meanwhile, agricultural expert Horace Phiri commended MBS for conducting the inspections but urged the bureau to broaden its oversight to include other agricultural inputs.

“We want to see MBS establish a stronger presence in the agriculture sector to ensure farmers have access to standardized seeds and fertilizers,” said Phiri.

In the previous growing season, several farmers reported being duped by dishonest traders who sold fake, underweight, or substandard fertilizers.
