Minister of Information, Communication and Technology, Dr. Shadrec Namalomba, has challenged the media to familiarize themselves with national and political party development blueprints, including Malawi 2063 and various party manifestos, to effectively contribute to the country’s social and economic transformation in the digital era.
Speaking at the Blantyre Press Club Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Friday, held under the theme, “Promoting Justice and Peace in the Digital Era,” Dr. Namalomba emphasized that such knowledge would enable the media to promote peace, fight injustice, and combat misinformation and disinformation.
"We must ensure that our reporting not only informs but also contributes to national development," said Dr. Namalomba. "By understanding our development blueprints, the media can tell stories that align with the country's growth agenda while upholding press freedom."
He also underscored the crucial role of the media in fostering unity and national cohesion, particularly in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
He added that the government is committed to ensuring media freedom by placing information officers and spokespersons in every government sector.
Vice General Secretary of the Blantyre Press Club, Yusuf Daisa, echoed the minister’s call, noting that the media is actively working to stay ahead in the fight against fake news and misinformation.
"Journalists today face a challenging environment with the rapid spread of misinformation and attacks. We are committed to adopting innovative approaches to verify information and ensure the public receives accurate news," he said.
Meanwhile, Ali Phiri, Executive Director of the Malawi Peace and Unity Commission, commended the media for its instrumental role in promoting peace during the 16 September elections, highlighting the sector’s contribution to sustaining democracy and social harmony.
On her part, Malawi Council of Disability Affairs (MACODA) spokesperson Harriet Kachimanga also implores on the journalists to continue promoting the rights of persons with disabilities by understanding the policies and protocols.
