Mutharika Pledges Merit-Based Cabinet, Economic Recovery and Unity

President Peter Mutharika has assured Malawians that the process of appointing a lean and efficient Cabinet is nearing completion, emphasizing that selections will be based strictly on merit, integrity, and regional balance.

Addressing a large crowd gathered near the Lilongwe Town Mosque on Tuesday, Mutharika said only individuals with a proven record of service and dedication to national interests will be included in the new Cabinet. He noted that his administration’s goal is to restore public confidence in government institutions through professionalism and accountability.

“The formation of this Cabinet is in its final stages,” he said. “We will ensure that only those who can serve the nation with integrity and efficiency are appointed. Malawi needs a government that works for all its people, not just a few.”

President Mutharika reaffirmed his government’s commitment to restoring economic stability and ensuring that national resources are used effectively to drive sustainable development. He stressed that every government ministry must play an active role in achieving these objectives.

In a strong appeal for unity and hard work, Mutharika urged all public officials — including those skeptical of his leadership — to put aside personal and political differences and focus on the national agenda.

“Progress can only be achieved if every public officer remains focused on national interests rather than personal or political divisions,” he said. “This is the time for us to rebuild, not to quarrel.”

Turning to issues of food security, the President reiterated his administration’s commitment to addressing hunger and ensuring adequate maize supplies across the country. He announced that consignments of maize purchased from Zambia are expected to begin arriving in Malawi next week, supplementing ongoing government distribution efforts.

Mutharika also revealed that Kamuzu Palace has sustained significant structural damage and is currently uninhabitable. As a result, he is temporarily residing elsewhere  while renovation works are underway.

Speaking at the same event, Minister of State Alfred Gangata — who also serves as the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the Central Region — praised the large turnout, describing it as a reflection of the public’s renewed confidence in President Mutharika’s leadership.

“The overwhelming support we are seeing today shows that Malawians are regaining trust in the President and the direction his government is taking,” Gangata said. “This administration has hit the ground running.”

President Mutharika is expected to officially open the 52nd Session of Parliament on Friday, where he will deliver his first State of the Nation Address since returning to power.
